2017 LAMMICO Medical School Scholarship Winners

LAMMICO recently awarded medical school scholarships to this past year’s incoming freshman classes. For the past 16 years, medical students have used funds presented by LAMMICO to help defray tuition and other expenses at all of Louisiana’s medical schools. We congratulate the following recipients who have been honored for the 2017 medical school year:

Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans

Anthony Nguyen graduated with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Xavier University. A life-long resident of New Orleans, Nguyen and his family were impacted by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and as a result, he lacked access to quality education in the hard-hit area of New Orleans East. Despite these challenges, he persevered and went on to achieve great academic success ranking in the 73rd percentile for his MCAT exam.

Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Shreveport

Ryan P. Mackay graduated Magna Cum Laude from Brigham Young University with a bachelor of science degree in physiology and developmental biology and mathematics. In his volunteer experience with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Honduras, Mackay trained and directed more than 200 volunteers and managed mission accounts, budgets and funds. His work “Liver Kinase B1 Inhibits the Expression of Inflammation-Related Genes Postcontraction in Skeletal Muscle” was published in the Journal of Applied Physiology in 2016.

Tulane University School of Medicine

Jorge E. Nagel graduated from Tulane University with a bachelor of science degree in biomedical and mechanical engineering and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering. As the founder of Rehydrate Solutions, LLC., he consulted with nutritionists and food scientists to develop and bring to market an all-natural electrolyte freezer bar called Lyte Stix. In addition to his academic achievements, he also holds numerous patents for new products he has designed and prototyped.
